Here's a small cropping of a piece I did for the Tomie dePaola Illustration contest that SCBWI had recently. The illustration was for the opening of Johanna Spyri’s wonderful book Heidi.
I thought it was appropriate for Illustration Friday's "layers".
Note- I just realized I had two versions of this illo that I worked on so I added another version where Heidi's clothes are bigger and the shoes a bit clunkier as well as a few other changes.
Not sure which one I like better?
She's so sweet. Beautiful illustration.
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I always love it when you post 2 versions of the same illo. I love to see the comparison.
ReplyDeleteI really like the top one!
ReplyDeletei love the first illo. :) great colors. :)
ReplyDeleteOh beautiful Phyllis!! I can't wait to see the whole piece!!
ReplyDeleteWell this is just my opinion.. I like a combo of both. I like the first one more as a whole, the color scheme, background, the woman and Heidi's clothes are just lovely. But I like how free Heidi looks on the second one, the way her hair is moving with the breeze. :o)
I think both are wonderful in different ways! Both are top-notch!
ReplyDeleteI like the top one better. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteJust for fun, I asked the kids which they liked better. The middle 3 said the top one, the oldest said the bottom one.
ReplyDeleteI think they're both great!
i like the top one better. The colors in that one give it a really good feel they work together really nicely and they feel clean and fresh. I also like the less baggy clothes, although I don't totally know why.
ReplyDeleteThe background details are great in both of them.
Thanks for all the great comments folks!! It's so much fun to see the different opinions!
ReplyDeleteShe's lovely...
ReplyDeleteboth are wonderfully done- I like the second best
These are both beautiful... I love the second one. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to compare the two; they're both really lovely. I enjoyed looking around your blog at your wonderful work!
ReplyDeleteThey both are lovely and a perfect fit for IF.
ReplyDeleteI like the expression in her face in the first one, but the clothes and shoes from the second one...
Very nice illustrations, love the bottom one! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Hon,thought I'd add my 2 cents. While I agree with most of the comments; basically that everyone enjoyed both illustrations, and even though the first rendition is my favorite, I would suggest that you go with your "GUT" feelings :) You've read the book, hence your interpretation is the one that matters! Love you, Pam
ReplyDeleteI prefer the top illustration. ;-)I love your art btw!
ReplyDeleteI like both for different reasons ... but, if I had to choose ... I think the top one wins out for me ... there's a warmth to it.
