Opinions needed from my illustrator friends

Although I am really busy with work right now(yay!), I still need to come up with a piece for my summer mailer. Gotta keep up the promotion to keep that work coming in! I desperately want to start doing more animals in my work. Don't get me wrong...I love doing children, too but I have a great love for all animals and I LOVE those wonderful books I see at the bookstore with animals as their main characters...so...I need to have more animals in my portfolio.

If you haven't noticed by now, I have an obsession with doggies so that's one of my favorite things to draw. Here is a piece I did with a book idea simmering in my head. Is this piece something that would entice editors and art directors?

I love this image - you've completely captured this dog's great character. More!

Lvve his expression, Phyllis!

Could his eyes be more open in wonderment or his mouth open a tiny
bit and a darker background for the fireflies come out at night. Boy, have they been big and bright in my woodland garden.

Ah, Phyllis, yeah, I HAVE to get out a summer promo, too. I've been putting it off, trying to come up with some earth-shattering fantastic concept... it's not happening! Like you, I want to do more animal art. I love your concept here! Unique - and I love the dog's expression! Like the above post, though, I'd suggest making the scene darker, more twighlight-ish for the lightening bugs. (I know this is hard to do!)

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I definitely agree about making the background darker. I'm also thinking the gold on the dog needs to have more red and less cyan, even if it is at night. It looks dingy or something.

Hi Phyllis-

I like this, BUT for a mailer I'd show more of your range...maybe by putting more movement into this, or making the night sky darker and making the image more dramatic? Where is your light source for example. This is cute, I 've just seen stronger pieces of yours on your blog.

Phyllis, I think you are right about the dog's color that would give the whole picture more of
a 3-D effect. Great idea for a child's illustration. It is playful and filled with wonderment.

Steph, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Thank you for your honesty and I had pretty much already come to this conclusion. Back to the drawing board...

Thanks all so much for your help on this!!

Hi Phyllis, this a wonderful portfolio piece, but for a postcard I agree with Stephanie about showing your range: action, interaction. The biggest response I got was when I did a piece that had a small story to it: the two pigs under the mistletoe. The boy pig was nervous and didn't know what to do, the girl piggy was shy but also waiting for her kiss! Check out Mary Engelbreit's work, how she fits in little stories on her cards. It's what makes her drawings stick out in a crowd (and what has made her a millionaire). But again, this is definitely a keeper for your portfolio, what a sweet character! I wish my goldens were drawn as well as yours. I personally though like the sky color as is, but again that's just my preference.

Thank you, Paige!! That is one of the reasons I love this blogging stuff! It is so helpful when an artist gets too close to a piece to walk away from it for a couple days and sure enough that's when the doubts start which are almost always founded. ;o)

There is so much pressure to create the PERFECT mailer piece but in reality if I just didn't over think it and just create for the fun of it then I would come up with something great!

i love this one! he looks so questioning like "what??!!" as above i would just make the background darker. i love how his mouth is like "huh?!" awesome job!! :D
